October 2026 snapshot: who held page one in 14 towns
One search phrase, "personal injury lawyer", run once in each of 14 county seats on October 21 and 22, 2026, from a desktop browser with no account signed in. It shows what those first pages looked like on those days. It cannot tell you what your town shows today: results change with device, location and time, and every practice area has its own page. Every table is below, with a smaller five-year sample from earlier in the month.
Method
We plan to repeat the snapshot; when we do, the new tables go here and the old ones stay.
One search per town, recorded as a person would see it
We typed "personal injury lawyer" followed by the town and state, the way someone writes it who knows where they are, into Google from a desktop browser 1,366 pixels wide, in English with United States settings, with no Google account signed in, from Austin, Texas, leaving the search location to Google. For each town we recorded whether an AI Overview appeared, how many businesses the map pack listed, how many organic web results the first page carried, and what kind of site held each web result: the firm's own site, a directory or review site, a national or regional advertising firm, or something else.
We did not count ads. Google shows ads unevenly to a signed-out browser, and an ad we did not see is not an ad that is not running. In Tyler the Local Services Ads block appeared above the map with the heading "Sponsored, Personal injury lawyers, Tyler"; in Johnson City a sponsored block appeared; elsewhere we saw none, and we draw nothing from that.
One search per town is a snapshot. Results move by the hour, by device, and by exactly where the searcher stands; a person on the square would see a map pack weighted to the square. Read the tables as a pattern across 14 towns on one day.
Towns: Tyler, Texas; Joplin, Missouri; Bowling Green, Kentucky; Grand Junction, Colorado; Dothan, Alabama; Hattiesburg, Mississippi; Bend, Oregon; Muncie, Indiana; Yakima, Washington; Lafayette, Louisiana; Johnson City, Tennessee; Rapid City, South Dakota; Florence, South Carolina; Sioux City, Iowa. They were chosen before the searches were run, for size and spread across states.
Finding 1
"Directory" means a listing site that sells placement to lawyers. We name those because they are not anyone's competitor. We do not name law firms.
Directories held two or three of the nine web results in all 14 towns, so firms compete for six or seven
- Directory sites
- National or regional firms (offices in several states or metros)
- Firms' own websites
Town by town, "personal injury lawyer [town] [state]", October 21 and 22, 2026.
| Town | AI Overview | Map pack listed | Web results | Directories | National or regional firms (several states or metros) | Firms' own sites |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tyler, TX | no | 3 | 9 | 2 | 0 | 7 |
| Joplin, MO | yes | 3 | 9 | 2 | 0 | 7 |
| Bowling Green, KY | no | 3 | 9 | 2 | 1 | 6 |
| Grand Junction, CO | no | 3 | 9 | 2 | 0 | 7 |
| Dothan, AL | no | 3 | 9 | 3 | 1 | 5 |
| Hattiesburg, MS | yes | 2 | 9 | 2 | 2 | 5 |
| Bend, OR | no | 3 | 9 | 2 | 0 | 7 |
| Muncie, IN | yes | 3 | 9 | 2 | 0 | 7 |
| Yakima, WA | no | 3 | 9 | 2 | 1 | 6 |
| Lafayette, LA | yes | 2 | 9 | 2 | 1 | 6 |
| Johnson City, TN | yes | 3 | 9 | 3 | 0 | 6 |
| Rapid City, SD | no | 3 | 9 | 2 | 0 | 7 |
| Florence, SC | yes | 2 | 9 | 2 | 0 | 7 |
| Sioux City, IA | no | 3 | 9 | 2 | 0 | 7 |
| Averages: directories 2.1 per town, national or regional firms 0.4, firms' own sites 6.4. "Firms' own sites" may include a regional multi-office practice we did not recognize as one; the count is of sites that were not directories, national advertisers or civic pages. | ||||||
The practical reading for these 14 towns: firms' own sites averaged 6.4 of the nine web results, and the two directory spots went to the same two directories in all 14. A firm cannot push Justia or Super Lawyers off the page, and it does not need to. It needs one of the six or seven.
Finding 2
An AI Overview is the generated summary Google places at the top of some results pages. Google launched the separate AI Mode in the US on May 20, 2025.
An AI Overview appeared in 6 of 14 towns, always above a map that still listed local firms
We read this cautiously. Six of 14 is not a trend line, and Google changes where it shows these summaries without notice. What we can say is that in every one of the six towns, the map pack with two or three local firms, their ratings and their phone numbers sat directly below the summary. People hiring a lawyer still mostly start with a search engine (54.4% in the AttorneySync study) and under 2% said they would hire through an AI tool. The summary is above the fold; the firm's name and number are the thing being summarized.
Finding 3
The map pack listed three firms in 11 towns and two in 3
Two firms in the pack is a smaller door than three. Google decides how many to show; the firm decides whether its profile is the kind that gets through. Each pack listed two or three firms with ratings, and the rating is the first thing a person compares.
The earlier sample
Different method, different question. Keep them apart: this one is a trend estimate from a tool, the snapshot above is a one-day live record.
Seven of eight independent injury firms in four towns had lost a third of their ranked searches since 2021
In the first week of October 2026 we picked the independent personal injury firms we could identify in Tyler, Joplin, Bowling Green and Grand Junction, eight in all, and compared a third-party estimate of how many searches each firm's website ranked for against the same estimate five years earlier. Seven had lost a third or more. In the same searches, large regional and national injury firms were buying the ads at the top of the page. Eight firms is a small sample and we treat it as a reason to look closer at any one firm.
Other people's surveys
These are not our data. Each survey has its own method and sample, linked in the sources below.
What people do with the results page
Scorpion's 2025 survey of 3,000 US adults found that 74% of people who got a referral to a lawyer still looked the firm up online before calling, that over half would not consider a firm rated below four stars, and that 72% move on if nobody answers within 24 hours. AttorneySync recorded 320 people on screen as they shopped for a personal injury lawyer: 54.4% started on a search engine, 13% started with an AI tool, under 2% said they would hire through one, and 66% wanted the first contact to be a phone call.
The phone is where it breaks. When Clio had a research firm contact 500 law firms as prospective clients in 2024, 40% answered the phone, 33% answered the email, and 14% of firm websites showed anything about pricing. A firm that ranks first and does not pick up loses the call it ranked for.
Caveats
What this snapshot cannot tell you
- It cannot tell you who is advertising. See the method.
- It cannot tell you what a person in the town sees on a phone at 7 pm. The pack would be weighted to their location and the page would be laid out differently.
- It covers one search phrase. "Car accident lawyer", "divorce attorney" and "probate lawyer" each have their own page and their own competitors, which is why the free memo uses up to ten phrases built from the cases a firm actually wants.
- It is one day. We plan to repeat it; when we do, both sets of tables will be on this page.
If you want the same look at your own town and your own practice areas, that is what the free two-page memo is. The sample report shows the format.
